What Day is it?

Today is Labor Day in the United States, so I’ll start off by saying “thank you” to those who are enjoying a day off from their jobs. As of September 1st, I haven’t had to acknowledge this holiday for two years, unless an invitation to a picnic is involved. It’s just another day off to anyone who is retired.

Every so often, I wake up in a need-for-caffeine fog and wonder, “What day is it?” Because one can lose sense of time and dates when it’s not important or there’s nothing on the schedule. That being said, August was a super busy month (in a good way) and September has already started to fill up with “stuff,” so I had better keep track of where I am, what I’m doing and when I’m supposed to eat.

Well, I never miss that last one. Eating is important. I rarely forget to eat.

Anyhow, I thought I would catch everyone up on my exciting (*ahem*) life since the last post and how I “labor” through the days and weeks.

I’ve been walking a lot, trying to get in what I can of nature while the weather is still warm. Many walks come after supper, often with neighbors (friends), but the waning daylight is making evening walks a tougher proposition. The sun goes down about 7:25 pm CST, so the early-bird dining special is becoming important when I can’t get out during the day.

Speaking of which, I’m doing a thing with Hoshi.

The little girl is fearless. She is not frightened by loud noises, thunder, or the loud garbage trucks that Gibbs hates. And while she gives it a safe distance, the vacuum cleaner does not make her run and hide under the bed. Hoshi is also an active kitten who needs discovery. Discovery in the bathtub, discovery under the comforter, discovery in the closets, discovery in the kitchen (to my consternation) or on the patio when I can supervise. Hoshi is curious. So, I decided to buy a cat backpack and take her for walks. She’s had two so far and it went well with minimal “what the heck is going on” cries from Hoshi. I try to stick with quiet places where there are trees and flowers and an occasional human walking or biking past. I want to get her used to car rides and being outside before it gets too cold, hoping she will still be good with this when spring rolls around again. Hoshi may have occasional car rides in the winter, to keep her used to the feeling of movement and so she doesn’t associate the rides only with vet visits.

Meanwhile, Gibbs is unaffected and doesn’t care. He hates the car, but loves his sleep.

I moved one of the cat trees into the living room and it seems to be a big hit.

The only issue is that it left an empty spot in the bedroom and no way for either Gibbs or Hoshi to peer out of the bedroom window at the birds. Sooooo…

Having another furball in the house has meant spending more on food, litter, vet visits, cat trees, cat toys, backpacks, etc., but I wouldn’t change a thing. Gibbs and Hoshi are my “kids,” and I accept complete responsibility in being a good cat mom. Plus, Hoshi has already decapitated two toy mice and that means we’re good to go if the real thing ever tries to get in.

Beside the normal routine of personal appointments, workouts and walks, watering flowers and the Thursday get-togethers with Natasha, another Iron Chef cook-off took place at my apartment on Saturday. Chef Natasha, Chef K and Chef Mary J spent a late afternoon and evening with three new recipes (garlic chicken, chicken stroganoff, inside-out pork dumplings), matching aprons, adult refreshment and lots of laughs. We started our own version of Iron Chef ten years ago (when we were young ;-), and although we have had times of letting this event go (a pandemic, for instance), we always manage to come back around and engage in a tasty time. Allez Cuisine (Go! Kitchen!)

The week to come will be another somewhat busy one. Somehow, I scheduled three lunch dates with various friends, one of which is out of town. I’m looking forward to all of them and I have Google calendar to thank for helping me keep track of where and when.

I may no longer acknowledge Labor Day as a “day off,” but truly appreciate having every day to myself, whether I don’t initially remember what day it is, have a complex week, or finally find a day to stay in my pajamas and write a post.

What have you been up to this weekend? I hope you are enjoying the last days of summer or winter and whatever is on your busy schedule.

I think this has been Gibbs’ plan all along. Keep that woman busy so I can sleep between meals and naps. It almost sounds like you need a holiday. The photos look great. The food looks and sounds delicious. Walking is a wonderful thing to do, and as long as Hoshi likes the view, schlep that kitty.

My holiday/vacation is coming up in October, Dan, when I head to CO. Then I can exchange two felines for a large dog and lots of hiking and sight-seeung. Of course, that means Gibbs will get to sleep as much as he wants as long as Hoshi doesn’t want to take himbfor a run around the apartment. 😉

Thank you! I often tell the little naughty one that it’s a good thing she’s so cute, but I think she already knows it. 😉

Hoshi is living the life! I love you carrying her out and about. Enjoy your Labor Day. More endless rain here, nowhere to go outside that isn’t muddy.

No walks with Hoshi today unless the sun comes out and it warms up. We’ve had a couple of cool days and I think today is the coolest. Flannel shirt kind of cool. So, I will see my personal trainer at 11:00 and then home for more tea and a good book.

The cat backpack is such a great idea! I’ve seen kitties on leashes but never in backpacks. So glad Hoshi is enjoying your forays into nature.
‘What day is it?’–I’m so glad you have those retirement moments, too. It’s no longer a workday–that’s all that matters. Enjoy the day off, Mary! 😆

Lois, I’ve wanted for years to train my cats on a leash, but always found an excuse to not follow through. Now that I am retired and Hoshi is willing, I got her started with the backpack. I’m not sure about a harness and leash yet. I may wait until she gets a little bigger so I can find something that fits her well. We can work on that over the winter months. The backpack will be good unless Hoshi gets too heavy to carry, but I’m hoping that’s a good muscle builder for me.

I will second that Labor day wish to all who work. Especially those who have to work on Labor day. Summer has been good in spite of on going car issues which are now in the past. Plenty of garden and granddaughter time. So all is well. Happy Labor day !

Happiness is working in the garden, John. I love having my patio plants and being responsible for watering and dead-heading the potted flowers in a local garden, but there’s really nothing like having your own yard and growing the things you love.

Mary, I so enjoy your writings. Your photos are artful and many are worthy of framing!

It is remarkable how quickly Gibbs and Hoshi acclimated. They certainly make an incredible pair.

Autumn received a cat backpack from Willow (who has changed name to Wren) for her birthday a few years ago. I am considering a cat stroller for Oreo. I need to work on my mobility because of my right knee.

You would not know Wren/Willow. She will be 20 yo in February. Autumn will be 13 in November.

        I miss you Mary!

        Hugs,
        Judy

Wow, I remember little Wren at a Bo concert. How time flies, huh? The girl that lives downstairs from me was 8 when I moved in and now she is driving. Yikes!

Thanks for the photo compliment, Judy. I love to take photos, especially when they turn out well enough for a frame. I’d like to frame some of my biking photos, but that’s a project for another day.

Gibbs and Hoshi get along for the most part (when she’s not being an ass);and I give the credit to Gibbs. He is a very laid back cat and I didn’t think it wouldbtake long for him to come to terms.

Miss you and love you too, Judy. Hope you can get the knee to feeling better.

That is so wonderful, taking the adorable Hoshi for a walk! I always love meeting people with a cat on my walks. Unfortunately, most of the time (+99%) you only get to meet dogs… I’m sure Gibbs doesn’t mind staying at home…

    • bikerchick57 says:

No, Gibbs does not mind. He gets some peace and quiet while we are gone. I met a woman on our first walk who said she would do that with her cat if she didn’t already have two dogs to walk. The canines get all the preferential treatment, Herman! 😉

  6. Damyanti Biswas says:

Looks like you had a great day! Gibbs is such a personality 😀 Hoshi seems like an inquisitive cat. Beautiful post.

    • bikerchick57 says:

Thank you, Damyanti! Every cat I’ve ever adopted has had a unique personality. Gibbs and Hoshi are no different.

I sort of think Gibbs does like the backpack kitty carrier – it means Hoshi is contained and removed for some uninterrupted rest! We were very busy this weekend – son#2 moved into his new house and we were half the “muscle”. Fortunately he didn’t have that much furniture and the move was completed Monday. We still have a few stored items in our basement that will need to go to the new place but there is no rush and it will all fit in the backseat of the car.

    • bikerchick57 says:

A new house, new beginnings…how exciting for son #2. Maybe not so exciting for the muscle until he has his things in order and invites you over for dinner. Or take you out for dinner.

Hoshi sleeps/plays in the second bedroom at night because she is still too wild at night. That is also quiet time for Gibbs. It works out well for both of us old beings as we need our beauty sleep. ;-p

You are definitely a good cat mom. Almost makes me want a kitten. Almost. I have to work on getting Mama Cat used to eating treats in the carrier as vet time is right around the corner. Thanks for the inspiration!

    • bikerchick57 says:

I understand the “almost.” I was there for a year and a half before I fell in love with Hoshi. You are a good cat and dog mom too, JoAnna. Good luck with Mama Cat!
