Beer with the Bud

“The best beers are the ones we drink with friends.” So it was on Saturday. Lunch, conversation, laughs and beer with a good friend. Biking/beer buddy and I finally scoped out a microbrewery in Oshkosh that had escaped us since it opened two years ago. Not sure how that happened. After a yummy lunch that included chicken panini, crab cakes, assorted sides and a ancho chocolate strawberry creme brulee, we headed over to Fifth Ward. Our favorite micro-brew? Tangerine Sour.Read more

SoCS: Around the Sun in 12

Three hundred sixty-five and one-quarter times around the sun. Twelve months. Another year has passed by and 2019 is almost finito. I thought I would take each month of the past year and share one or two things I remembered about it (good or bad) and see what kind of picture is left. January – Horrible winter month. I worked from home one day, toward the end of the month, because the wind chill was -50F (-45.5C). Brrrr. February –Read more

SoCS: Breathing Seasons

Breathe in Breathe out Lungs cauterized by winter’s frozen retort Stark trees bare their darkened soul Breathe in Breathe out Lungs refreshed by spring’s unprocessed reply White birch bare their newborn green Breathe in Breathe out Lungs parched by summer’s brazen song Limbs bare their sultry, layered bark Breathe in Breathe out Lungs clear and crisp by autumn’s chameleon chatter Leaves bare their red and golden hues Breathe in Breathe out Lungs expand and collapse by pages on the calendarRead more

Ride Number Three

On Sunday, I managed to get in bike ride number three. This is quite the feat considering how miserable the spring has been. Although the day was somewhat cool for June 2nd, in the mid 60’s, I put on the bike gear, filled up the water bottle, and headed out on the CB trail. Thank God it was open. Prior to Memorial Day weekend, I was driving to work one morning and passed a big electronic sign that said, “CBRead more

SoCS: Neighbors

Have I told you lately that I love my neighbors? I do. I reside in a large apartment complex and my building contains six apartments. With the exception of very new neighbors (it’s the one apartment that’s seen a lot of turnover), everyone else has been hanging out together, helping one another, and becoming friends as we live our separate lives with work and family. It’s an unusual situation for me as I’ve not experienced this type of camaraderie withRead more

When it’s this nice…

When it’s this blue… I must. When it’s this green… I shall. When the tunnels beckon… I go forth. When water brings peace… I breathe. When life tries to throw me… I stop and rest. When it’s this nice… See you later, alligator. (Wiouwash State Trail and Black Otter Lake – July 7, 2018)Read more

SoCS: Old Man Aggressive

He hides in the shadow of summer Snarls with his upper lip Waits ready, anxious to pounce with Canadian cold Hostility chases away retreating geese Gives shivers to a fading tan Takes aggressive to the edge as if he were a hungry lion Old man bitterly bites a cheek or two Whirls across smooth black tar Leaves his signature of white and never wants to leave He punches spring in the gut Sends warmth to the ground Adheres himself withRead more

SoCS: All that is good

Dear Trail, You are the picture of life, of breath You lead me past spring mud and melting snow Into summer’s green and warmth Through autumn’s colorful splendor I adore you   You are the picture of happiness and joy Your path takes me on a pleasant journey Into forests of trees and places unknown Through bright sunlight and dancing shadows I admire you   You are the picture of all that is good You take me along the pathRead more

2017 in Pictures

Like sands through the hourglass, so was the year of 2017. It’s January 1st and I’m hanging out at home in my pajamas. I might find my way to yoga or the gym later, but it depends on whether or not I really want to wander out into the deep freeze. In a sense, the cold makes me hardier than the average Floridian, able to withstand very large temperature ranges. On the other hand, cold is cold and it isRead more

Gone

Gone are the flowers of summer. Burgundy, pink and white. They lived forever, it seems. Through rain and blazing sun bright. Gone are the hues of precious petals. The colors that swathed the porch. They lived forever, it seems. And held nature’s beautiful torch. Gone are the leaves that climbed and spread. The vine as it followed its trail. They could have lived forever, it seems. Impatiens under the guise of frail. Gone are the flowers, into an empty field.Read more

The Hot and Cold of it

Hot. That is the weather today. Cold. In another month or a few days, it will go away. Hot. How I like my coffee in the white mug. Cold. What comes with the chills and a bug. Hot. The muscular guy and his tight jeans. Cold. Inhospitable or freezing is what it means. Hot. The flashes, oh the flashes. Cold. What might feel good on skin rashes. Hot. The flames of a summer’s campfire. Cold. A shower to squelch desire. Hot.Read more
