#SoCS: Bike Tripping

Biking buddy and I have been busy planning an end-of-June trip to Missouri.

The Katy Trail, at 237 miles, is the longest “rail-to-trail” recreational delight in the United States. Spanning East to West from Machens to Clinton, it follows the path of the Missouri River for most of its length. We will be biking the western half of the trail, with visits to the Clydesdale ranch, breweries, wineries, and historic buildings thrown in.

In preparation, biking buddy and I made our first foray into the world of Airbnb, bought ourselves a guidebook, started planning our daily routes and activities, and had the local bike repair guy show us how to change a flat tire. We’ve already had practice on the latter as Kona’s front tire became perfectly flat not long after tire-changing class. We’re hoping to avoid this on the trail, but we’ll be prepared.

Biking buddy and I are excited about this trip and the only thing that would hold us back is if the gas prices get even more out of hand than they already are. Then again, what is the price of a week’s worth of fun?

In other related news, I bought myself a bike trainer in order to get in shape for the outside biking season. I’m hoping by mid April, I’ll be out on the local trails, breathing in the smell of spring and finding the happy place that’s been missing all winter. First, though, I have to build up leg strength and stamina and that may be a taller order than previous years. I have been too much the “slug” this winter and it’s time to change that course.

Happy Saturday and Happy Trails! Any fun trips in your future?

Stream of Consciousness Saturday is the brainchild of author Linda G. Hill. Every Friday, Linda provides her followers with an inspiring blogger’s prompt. It can be a word or words and sometimes bonus points are involved (my favorite). Linda asks us to write without editing, other than correcting spelling errors.

Just go with the flow.

Like a babbling brook or rain drops. Click HERE if this type of writing floats your boat or helps with your decision-making. Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “trip.” Use it any way you’d like. Have fun!

I am excited for your upcoming trip. Gas prices would have to skyrocket to put that on hold. Think of all the money you’ll be saving by seeing the sights from your bike. Good luck with the trainer and I hope you get out on the local trails earlier than planned. Have a great weekend, Mary.

Yeah, Dan, I think gas prices would have to be astronomically high for us to stay home. I am so antsy to get outside on the bike. It’s that time of year when cabin fever is at its worst, even though the cranes have returned and the promise of spring is only a few days away.

I hope you will keep notes on the trail because I am sure we would all love to hear about it!

  3. Is a bike trainer one of those things that holds your regular bike up so you can exercise by peddling? If you are physically able to make that trip don’t let the price of gas hold you back. I’m positive you are creative enough to save for gas money, and one never knows when they won’t be able to do something like that in the future. Go for it, Mary!

Yes, to your question about the bike trainer. It’s in a corner of the livingroom, facing the TV so I can bike to music or a YouTube video.
I’ll work on saving that gas money, Judy.

Looks like you’re going to follow a very beautiful trail, Mary. I’m sure you’ll have a great time!

Hi Heather! We are biking three days to start, one day off (to see the sights), three more days of biking, and then sight seeing on the way home. We tend to bike around 25 miles each day, depending on condition, weather, etc. It will be so nice to get away and do something fun.

      • That sounds perfect. (She says after ducking off to convert miles into kilometres…) I hope the weather gods are kind to you. Can’t wait to read about it when it happens.
