Never Ever

“I could never in a hundred summers get tired of this.” ~Susan Branch~ One last summer hurrah That is all I need Til the season rolls around again And I am on my steed Summers tend to feel short in Wisconsin, but we northerners take advantage of the season as much as possible. Biking buddy and I had two wonderful days of wheeling in the sun over the past weekend, with unseasonably mild temps in the 70’s and 80’s F.Read more

#CBWC: The Bridges of Wiouwash Trail

This week’s entry for Cee’s Black and White Photo Challenge (CBWC) includes photos of bridges. A warning to all who go past Perhaps you should not pedal so fast Stop and enjoy the scenic view The Wiouwash Trail gently beckons you Its bridges take you to the other side Or bars you from a former divide. (The Wiouwash Trail is almost 28 miles long, from Oshkosh to Hortonville, WI. The photos you see here are from a nine mile stretchRead more

Busy by Sinatra

Some weeks there is not much happening on the retirement calendar, but August is turning out very differently. After spending five days biking in the Milwaukee area toward the end of July, then relaxing/catching up a few days last week, it appears the agenda will soon be escalating with personal appointments, volunteer work, an out-of-town girlfriend visit, coffee with a new pastor and an outdoor music festival in Appleton that fires up this Thursday. I may not be publishing prize-winningRead more

Killing Two Trails with Two Wheels

Let’s sit down with a fish fry and malty ale and catch up on a biking adventure, shall we? On July 2nd, bike and I headed to Kewaunee, a small city on the shores of Lake Michigan, to explore a southern section of the Ahnapee State Trail. A few years ago, biking buddy and I rode the northern part of the trail, from Sturgeon Bay to Algoma, which ended up to be about 32 miles. This time it would beRead more

#SoCS: I Drive to this Place

I drive to the forest I hide in the forest Breathing in cool air I know in this place It is a safe space For a grumbly soul to bare I ride past a thousand trees The blue of lake’s seas And give two legs a dare Twists and turns abound Up and down without sound In sync with a gravelly stare I drive because I must The heat at home an angry bust The heart finds its weather loveRead more

Monday Mash-Up

Today is a bit of this and that Photo images of where it’s at Trails, flowers and an unashamed cat A mash-up entry of the last few weeks Nothing outrageously new or unique Images of the days that gratefully speak Down a hill, up a hill, pedaling away Going as far as I say it’s okay Enjoying a sun or cloud-infused day Sitting on a patio, taking in the sight Flowers in purple, funky orange and white This is theRead more

#CBWC: Walking, Hiking

This week’s entry for Cee’s Black and White Photo Challenge (CBWC) includes photos of places to walk or hike. The majority of photos were taken while I was on the bike (naturally), but the trails and reserves in the Fox Cities host walkers, hikers, and bicyclists. We have a plethora of nature’s beauty to choose from. Join the fun of black and white photography by clicking on the link at the beginning of the post. Details and weekly themes canRead more

Courtesy in Three Words

“On your left!” This is a common courtesy shout-out that bicyclists are supposed to give others on the trail system rather than silently passing and scaring the crap out of the person or persons walking or biking on the right. I’ve already noticed that this courtesy has been in short supply as the weather has turned warmer. I’m not sure if bikers are embarrassed to say those three words, if they don’t know they are supposed to say those threeRead more

#CBWC: Along the Water Trails

This week’s entry for Cee’s Black and White Photo Challenge (CBWC) includes photos depicting in or on water. I’m not sure if “alongside” water counts, but it’s what I have to offer this week. When I bike or walk the local trails, I often parallel or cross water in the form of a lake, a river, a channel, or marsh. The Fox Valley area has plenty of water spaces to enjoy throughout the year. Following are a few water photosRead more

SoCS: An Addition to the Menu

This past week was a glorious addition to a fall biking menu. Rather than normal high temperatures in the upper 40’s to low 50’s F, we have been basking in the warmth of the 60’s and low 70’s. It is the weather I had hoped for in October. It’s been a blessing as the loveliness of the outdoors has kept my mind off the national election and on to more important matters: time on the nearby state bike trails. IRead more
