#WATWB: Goats in Service

During this past week, starting on June 21st, goats were hired to combat invasive plant species at the 1000 Islands Nature Center in Kaukauna, Wisconsin. You can watch a video and read more HERE. Thousand Islands first used goats to eat invasive plants in 2018, when nine goats from Mulberry Lane Farm arrived at the center. Ridding the grounds of the invasive species allows the native plants to grow and thrive. Read additional information from the 1000 Islands website HERE.Read more

One-Liner Gibbs

Gibbs took his annual trip to the vet on Monday. He hates the carrier and car rides, so I imagined the thought from his handsome face as we drove home from the place of disrepute. “This is such bullshit.“ Gibbs is a healthy boy. He weighs the same as last year, 12.4 pounds. His color-changing left eye is functioning properly, but we keep watch of it. He had his rabies and distemper shots, and bloodwork was submitted to the labRead more

A Social Media Christmas?

Question… What if the birth of Jesus had been witnessed on social media? What would people have posted on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok and elsewhere? Perhaps a picture like the one above with the hashtag #HolyMotherofGod! How about #miracle or #Hehascome Maybe #smellyanimals or #furrybeasts Or #threehandsomewisemen, #aretheysingle There might have been video of a baby crying or donkeys braying. Images of things that we probably should never see. Or Joseph telling the guy with the cell phone, “Hey! GiveRead more

SoCS: Prose from the Pod

Brush me right there On the belly square Along the soft, creamy hair If you naively dare I’m going to stay right here Not to be cavalier, but… Don’t go near Queenie dear She’s up to something, I fear I command the brush, I say It is the pampering day Hold the hairspray Human, do not walk away In the shadows I shall hide With knowledge, abide In safety simplified From Ziva’s brand of homicide Brush me, brush me now!Read more

A Bad Remake

“It’s the same thing every day, Clean up your room, stand up straight, pick up your feet, take it like a man, be nice to your sister, don’t mix beer and wine ever…oh yeah, don’t drive on the railroad tracks.” ~Phil Connors~ Groundhog Day It’s Day 72 of working from home during a pandemic. I’m fine except some days I feel like Phil, on repeat, only as a woman with a brother. While no two days have been exactly alike,Read more

Stripes, Shadows, Light

“I asked the Zebra, are you black with white stripes? Or white with black stripes? And the zebra asked me, Are you good with bad habits? Or are you bad with good habits?” ~Shel Silverstein~ “Your identity is like your shadow: not always visible and yet always present.” ~Fausto Cercignani~ “I’ve earned my stripes; I don’t need to prove myself to anyone.” ~Stacey Dooley~ “The eye is always caught by light, but shadows have more to say.” ~Gregory Maguire~ “WeRead more

Social Whatever from the Pod

So, Ziva, what’s the deal here? What do you mean Gibbs? Why is mom home all the time? Do you have a problem with that? Well, no, not really. It just seems weird that she’s spending so much time in the bedroom. With us. That’s because she’s working from home. Why would she do that? Does mom miss us? Perhaps, but I heard her talking to the other human. They said something about social distancing and being safer at home.Read more

SoCS: If He Could Talk

“Oh boy…” “What is it Gibbs?” “Why don’t you ever stay home?” “I am home, sitting here in my pajamas.” “I mean all day.” “Oh…” “It’s one of those two days when you don’t have to earn money for kibble.” “Yes it is.” “Then why don’t you stay home?” “Because I have other things to do.” “Like what?” “Like shopping for food, my own kibble if you will. Or shopping for clothes, having lunch with friends, going to church, ridingRead more

Most, Ever

Why is it when I saw this cat and quote on one of my cat calendars, I immediately thought of Mr. Gibbs. This guy. I thought, “I don’t need an annoying ghost, I already have an annoying cat.” A cat that yowls for food and attention and nothing. A cat that refuses to let me sleep in. Ever. A cat that doesn’t want to follow the rule of no visits to the kitchen. A cat who believes his needs areRead more

Those Things

“Obstacles do not block the path, they are the path.” ~Zen proverb~ Last week, my biking buddy and I faced a few obstacles on the trail – animals, vegetation, slippery mud, water traps, hills and tree roots poking through the pavement. As any biker knows, obstacles can create a dangerous situation if attention is not paid to what’s ahead. During our week-long escapade, we encountered hopping frog alley, flying grasshopper alley, scurrying bunnies and chipmunks, wild turkeys, greasy mud patchesRead more
