Prising Gibbs

“Try to prise a limpet away from its rock and it will cling all the harder.”

― Jeremy Holme

A limpet is a marine mollusk.

I have a cat who will serve as its stand-in.

Some days, prising Gibbs away from my side requires a chisel and pry bar. I am his rock with a thin coating of super glue. Where I go, he goes. When I sit, there he is – gray paws kneading rhythmically on a pair of Lee jeans and one green eye staring me down with a demand for attention.

Pet me, human.

Don’t you dare get up, human.

Stay here forever, human.

Gibbs is an attention seeker, want for human company and committed to the side of a pant leg or the hollow of a flesh-and-bones lap. I’ve not had such an animal before. Cats are supposed to ignore, not implore.

Gibbs wants to be a clinging limpet unless he deems sleep or food more important.

(Well, food IS more important.)

I’m wondering what will happen when I take a vacation in July. No lap or leg time from his human for four days and four nights, only the intermittent appearance of his cat sitter with food and pinch-hitting attention.

I wonder if that will be enough for him.

I wonder if he will be mad.

I wonder if I’ll be able to prise Gibbs from the comfort of his rock and the couch upon my return.

I may need help and a tool.

Jimi says: ‘Hey human, I wonder if it’s possible to take Gibbs with you on your vacation…??’ 😉

Ha! Please tell Jimi that Gibbs hates riding in the car and I imagine he would hate riding bike with me even more. He’ll be fine at home…I’ll make my absence up to him somehow. 🙂😼

Well, I hope you enjoy that vacation, Mary. Gibbs will have plenty to say to you when you return. Just be sure to being him a souvenir!

Oh my, I don’t envy you when you return. One of our cats welcomes us back with open arms, the other gives us Attitude for days. 😆

Most likely, Gibbs will be utilizing super duper heavy duty glue when I get back. And lots of singing and scolding. He’s not one to give attitude, but he’ll certainly let me know that my absence was not the least bit funny.

  4. Aww poor Gibbs! If you leave a pair of jeans you’ve worn for him to sit on he’ll have something that carries your scent to bring him comfort while you’re away 💜

I’ve thought of that! I have a raggedy sweater I wear often that I will definitely leave on the bed, but maybe jeans too.

He’s gotten used to your regular presence, which, of course, he thinks was a change made for his benefit. He’s going to plot a few hair balls for when you return, but I suspect he will do alright.

    • bikerchick57 says:

Gibbs very rarely brings up hairballs, Dan, but I’m sure he’ll find a way to puke up his food or do something to garner my attention.

Mama Cat likes to lounge with me on the couch though prefers me to come sit in the chair in her room so she can stay on my lap forever. I worried about her when I went away for weekends in May and then June. She came out to eat what was given to her, but did not warm up to the petsitter or my husband. When I got home Monday she was fine but more in my face with extra nudges for petting. Hopefully they realize we will always return.

Hehe! You think he’s clingy now? Just wait until you get back – he will never want to let you out of his sight!!!

You may be right! This will be a test to determine if I never leave home again (ha!), if I get him a little furry friend, or if I allow him to cope with my absence on occasion.

I had an excellent time, Teagan! Gibbs was well cared for and has welcomed me home by sticking close to me for two days.
