Letting Go of 40 Years

What would you do if a friend of 40 years suddenly stopped talking? Radio silence. No phone calls, no letters, no explanation, no nothing. It will be three years in December since I last talked to my friend. I’ve been alternately sad, hurt and angry at various times, but Thursday was the worst. Perhaps it was the mutual acquaintance I ran into the day before who shared that he had seen my friend a month ago, had lunch with her,Read more

Identity: What Did I Miss?

I’m staring at the ID card I’ve had for several years. This card tells everyone Mary is a permanent employee for a state government agency and assigns an ID number. It also contains one of the few ID or driver’s license photos in which I don’t appear to have woken from a two-day drunk. ID stands for “identity,” but you wouldn’t learn much about me from the plastic rectangle that is clipped to a piece of wardrobe Monday through Friday.Read more

Guessing Game

Last Saturday, I asked Natasha an important question. “Guess what day it is?’ After a few seconds of intense thought… “Is it my birthday?” No. “Is it Saturday?” Well, yeah, but…no. “Is it Star Trek Day?” Every day is Star Trek Day. “Is it Columbus Day?” No. Natasha guessed a few additional days related to Star Trek and whatever bounced off the top of her head, but I don’t remember the exact words. In trying to recollect them several hoursRead more

Who Can You Trust?

Monday afternoon was quite manic at work. Too much going on, all at once. The day started out great, with sunshine and a meeting of peers to discuss how we can make work life better for ourselves and fellow employees…short of retirement or having the winning lottery ticket or adding a wine bar in every office. We had a great discussion and came up with a few notable ideas. Then I drove back to my office and it kind ofRead more

Huh?

“What did I do?” That’s what mom asked me on Sunday. Twice. I answered, “I don’t know,” twice. I did not have a clue. Did she spill her coffee or steal someone’s oatmeal at breakfast? In hindsight, I should have answered, “I don’t know, but do you need bail money?” This post has been brought to you by the question of the day. It has also been brought to you by Linda G. Hill’s “One-Liner Wednesday.” All you need to play alongRead more

Worry

Questions, always questions Will I? Can I? What if? Thick as grandma’s gravy Murky as dog-day waters It hangs in the air like a dense fog that fails to lift Doubts, always doubts I won’t I can’t If will happen Never positive in thought Believing in armageddon It drags its victims along through a pool of coagulated sludge Fear, always fear I submit I cringe A chill rises Tomorrow is at the forefront Yesterday still concerns It lurks in an inkyRead more

Forty-Two Years

The year of 1976, May. Young, naive, impressionable, eighteen years of age, ears glistening with dew.   She prepares, cinching the fabric belt of a washed-out, blue shirtdress with vertical white buttons.   Her hair dark, it glistens purple in the sun as she hesitates toward the door that leads to a career.   The resume is thin… field work, picking strawberries, factory work, packing cheese, one year with an attorney.   The one sits behind a desk. He feelsRead more

A Man Walks into a Bar…

“I like smart jokes, I like dumb jokes, and I like dumb jokes done smartly.” ~Mike Myers~ By the title of this post you may have thought that I was going to connect this post to Dan Antion’s usual Saturday SoCS-at-the-Bar post. You may be right, in a sense, but I’m really here to tell jokes. First, the questions. Why couldn’t the bike stand up? Why did Captain Hook cross the road? Why did the lifeguard not want to rescueRead more

Closing Monday

Monday is almost at a close Good thing, I suppose While not the worst, it wasn’t the best This Monday was a low-life pest From a cat’s paw digging into my face To a livelihood’s quickened pace “Just leave me alone,” was the anthem cry One more email and I shall die I’m sorry, I’m not the Cheers bar Your ridiculous questions go too far While it’s sunny and warm outside At a desk I must begrudgingly reside Reviewing, redacting,Read more

Flewn Time

I often look for the answer to the question… “How did it get so late so soon?” Does anyone know? It’s almost December, three weeks and five days before Christmas. We haven’t seen much snow. Why do the days go by so fast? Does anyone see? Until January 1st, when time seems to stop around here. Most northerners will agree. Why does Saturday suddenly turn to Monday? Does anyone care? We need another weekend day to finish what we started.Read more

SoCS: Which is True?

Which is true? That you love me or I love you? This is true… I love the color blue. Which is true? That He created all or it’s a scientific fact? This is true… I don’t own a witch’s black hat. Which is true? Snow is pretty or heat is ugly? This is true… I always try to be friendly. Which is true? Friends are forever or a passing fancy? This is true… I have a dear friend Nancy. WhichRead more
