Killing Two Trails with Two Wheels

Let’s sit down with a fish fry and malty ale and catch up on a biking adventure, shall we? On July 2nd, bike and I headed to Kewaunee, a small city on the shores of Lake Michigan, to explore a southern section of the Ahnapee State Trail. A few years ago, biking buddy and I rode the northern part of the trail, from Sturgeon Bay to Algoma, which ended up to be about 32 miles. This time it would beRead more

#SoCS: I Drive to this Place

I drive to the forest I hide in the forest Breathing in cool air I know in this place It is a safe space For a grumbly soul to bare I ride past a thousand trees The blue of lake’s seas And give two legs a dare Twists and turns abound Up and down without sound In sync with a gravelly stare I drive because I must The heat at home an angry bust The heart finds its weather loveRead more

Just Land the Plane!

I have suffered with motion sickness all of my life. As a child and teenager, I discovered two things: 1) The Tilt-A-Whirl and most spinning amusement rides do not co-habitate well with a motion-challenged stomach, and 2) reading a book in the backseat of a car while on a family vacation does not end well for anyone. As an adult, there have been additional lessons. Lake Michigan and motor trolling for salmon in choppy waters is a big NO. ARead more

Thursday Doors: Breakwater

Over the Memorial Day weekend, my brother, the girlfriend and I paid a visit to the Manitowoc Breakwater Lighthouse. Manitowoc, WI, sits on the western shores of Lake Michigan, about an hour’s drive from where I live. I’ve been to this city many times to feel the cool effects of the lake shore, to ride the Maritime trail on the bike, to visit West of the Lake Gardens for splendid summer color, or to eat lunch at Courthouse Pub, oneRead more

Landscape: Sister Bay & Fall Festival

Last October, four girlfriends and I spent the weekend in Door County, Wisconsin. It was a sunny, albeit cool, weekend, but the lack of rain made for a great day at Sister Bay’s 70th Fall Festival. The fall festival is considered to be the “granddaddy” of all festivals in Door County.  What began as a celebration and reward for the Door County tourist workers after a busy summer season has evolved into one of the largest weekend celebrations on theRead more

My Drug of Choice

It’s not what you’re thinking. I have a difficult time tolerating certain prescription medications and over-the-counter cold medications. Many induce wooziness and nausea. Therefore, there is no wanton desire for illegal substances that would only torment and terrorize an otherwise healthy well-being. No, that stuff is not for me. This, girls and boys, is the drug of choice. It never makes me queasy, gives me a headache, or makes me throw up in the grass outside the apartment (that is forRead more
