Three of Everything

“So when you’re coldFrom the inside outAnd don’t know what to do,Remember love and friendship,And warmth will come to you.”― Stephen Cosgrove It’s cold outside. It’s been cold outside since last Friday, after our first major snowstorm of the winter. The 10-day forecast predicts a continuation of the cold: Highs in the single digits (F) with wind chills below zero. The sun and blue skies have been oh so pretty, but there’s no warmth to either one. Walking outside is currentlyRead more

A Slap of the White Glove

“Challenge yourself to be an example of change.”― Debasish Mridha Staying active in Wisconsin in the winter, during a pandemic, can be like staying sober after two or three beers. It’s difficult, especially when the fierce NE winds and single digit (F) temps make me shiver at the thought. Winter often has the effect of invoking hibernation – the desire to sleep and be lazy, along with watching TV from the butt indentation of the couch, writing sparsely and the lackRead more

Stop Touching Me!

“The snow doesn’t give a soft white damn whom it touches.” ~E.E. Cummings~ It snowed in Wisconsin on October 25th. Too damn early. Although it’s always a possibility, I prefer to wait until after Thanksgiving to witness the first snowfall. First snowfalls tend to be the prettiest, except when they come a month before anyone is ready and I’m not ready. Then again, it could be worse. Check out this post from Shelley at Quaint Revival. New Month, New Year

“January is here, with eyes that keenly glow, A frost-mailed warrior striding a shadowy steed of snow.” –  Edgar Fawcett After several days of above-normal temps, along with sun, rain, and pea-soup fog, it has turned colder and snowed. It’s a fitting start to the month of January in the Northern Hemisphere.  Snow and cold are expected here in the heart of winter, but not necessarily desired unless you own skis or a snowmobile.  I desire a gentler winter, with lessRead more

SoCS: Around the Sun in 12

Three hundred sixty-five and one-quarter times around the sun. Twelve months. Another year has passed by and 2019 is almost finito. I thought I would take each month of the past year and share one or two things I remembered about it (good or bad) and see what kind of picture is left. January – Horrible winter month. I worked from home one day, toward the end of the month, because the wind chill was -50F (-45.5C). Brrrr. February –Read more

Tanking it to Winter

I received an email on Monday from a co-worker. “Are you done with the weather yet?” My response… “I want to run over Father Winter with a tank. A huge tank.” She deadpanned… “There’s no need for violence.” Oh, yes there is, my dear. Yes, there is. The need for a tank began at the end of January, when a snowstorm turned into -50 F wind chills. Father Winter has been miserable ever since. Snow Ice More Snow More IceRead more

SoCS: Spoke Too Soon

It spoke too soon. Spring. The season didn’t shout loud enough on March 20th. (It was more like a whimper.) It’s been a retreating plod toward warmer weather and green grass. Last weekend, we had the worst April snowfall on record. Actually, it was a blizzard because the winds were howling as well. At times, the snow fell sideways. And blew sideways. As you noticed within my Wednesday post, I spent the entire weekend indoors and did not venture outRead more

A Snowy Perspective

A Facebook friend commented on Saturday: “Dear Mother Nature, hey girl, let’s talk. It’s this whole snowing in April thing. Is there something else going on or troubling you? Is it Father Time again and his ever insistent marching on? Listen sweetie, I get he can be stubborn, but please don’t take it out on me or the state of Wisconsin. I love you through every season and change, you know that. So, can we go back to clear andRead more

Break Time!

As of December 23, 2014, at approximately 1 pm, I will be on vacation from work. I don’t have to go back until January 5th. Much like a five year old child on Christmas Eve, I can hardly wait. Instead of the “Twelve Days of Christmas,” this will be the Twelve Days of Vacation. WooHoo! To honor and respect this time off, I will be holding myself to as little blogging as possible. You won’t hear a peep from me the remainder ofRead more
