The Door from Which I Waited

The door from which I sat on the other side The door from which I waited to be loved The door from where I looked at you All of you with longing green eyes I verbally begged you Please turn the handle of the door and take me home Love me Feed me Rescue me from the green walls and the barrier of wood and glass You kept walking by I kept pleading Then… SHE walked up to the doorRead more

SoCS: This Door

This door I walk through every week It is her petite figure I seek Sleeping in a brown broda chair Wrinkly forehead under gray hair I say, “Hello, mom, how are you?” She says, “Who are you?” I tell her my name is Mary but she seems a bit wary It goes back and forth most days This unknowing haze Am I sister or daughter? Is it March or October? This door leads to Pauline The Energizer Bunny machine StillRead more

Thursday Doors: Beerscursion

I’ve been absent from Thursday Doors for about five months and have missed it greatly. A few issues kept me from joining in on a weekly basis: Work Life outside of work A serious lack of time Today, however, I’m joining in for a few good reasons: I’ve had door photos waiting in the wings since last fall I wanted to honor Norm’s return after a well-deserved hiatus Beer I bet that last bullet point got your attention, right? In early November,Read more

Thursday Doors: A Walk Along the River

In June I went for a walk. I know, surprising. The walk took me to the part of Appleton known as “The Flats.”  The Flats is a well-known area that is home to industry, apartment buildings, eateries and two walking trails along the banks of the Fox River. I’ve walked the Newberry trail many times, but this summer I discovered the start of the Fox Trot trail is right across the road and wraps around a portion of the river.Read more

Thursday Doors: Breakwater

Over the Memorial Day weekend, my brother, the girlfriend and I paid a visit to the Manitowoc Breakwater Lighthouse. Manitowoc, WI, sits on the western shores of Lake Michigan, about an hour’s drive from where I live. I’ve been to this city many times to feel the cool effects of the lake shore, to ride the Maritime trail on the bike, to visit West of the Lake Gardens for splendid summer color, or to eat lunch at Courthouse Pub, oneRead more

Thursday Doors: The Florist

It’s almost flower planting time here in Zone 4. By the time Memorial weekend arrives at the end of May, most gardeners and plant/flower lovers will have thrown their favorite flowers and vegetables into the ground or in pretty clay pots. I’m a plant/flower lover with not-so-pretty plastic pots. It made sense for me (my car insisted) to make a slight detour on Saturday to check out a local florist’s early offerings in the Garden Center, greenhouse, and gift store.Read more

The Doors of Door County

I hope Norm won’t take offense.Today, as part of Norm’s Thursday Door series, I’m utilizing doors from over four years ago. Doors that were not meant to be the showcase, but rather the backdrop. Doors that are from Door County, the “thumb” of Wisconsin – the place where summer means mega tourists and tourism dollars. I’ve been to Door County since the 2012 visits, but never for a “Doorscursion.” One usually heads up to this Wisconsin County for relaxation, toRead more

Thursday Doors: A Tale of Two Pubs

Today’s Thursday Doors post is brought to you by Norm 2.0, two pubs and adult refreshment. There are two establishments in Appleton that I would take visitors to if A) they wanted to be somewhere unique and drink a dirty snowball and/or B) they were connoisseurs of beer. Today, I am sharing their doors, a little history, and a few photos from inside. Cleo’s Brown Beam Do you love the holidays? All holidays? Then you would love Cleo’s Brown Beam.Read more

The Bare Truth

TRUTH 1: “I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer.” ~Abraham Lincoln~ TRUTH 2: Some doors don’t give away what’s really inside. TRUTH 3: Some doors are just not exciting enough for Norm’s Thursday Doors. TRUTH 4: A sign always tells it like it is. TRUTH 5: Very few can resist beer and aRead more

Thursday Doors, a Train Depot, and Beer

I’m pretty sure Dan has become excited merely by the title of this post, as he should. Today is Norm’s Thursday Door Day, a WordPress blogging sensation as far as I can tell. I’ve wanted to join in the excitement for some time now, but never had a proper subject. I pass many doors during the day, but they all seem so boring, without character or a story. It took a trip to Green Bay to find a door worthy ofRead more
