The State of Confidence

Some days I have it…confidence. I’m confident in the ability to complete work assignments, to have fun on a bike ride, to serve the members of my church, to write a blog post, to be a good friend, to make a mean bowl of jambalaya, to eat a daily dose of dark chocolate, to love people and the cats, to take care of mom and my own health, to act silly, to parallel park, to enjoy nature, to be aRead more

It’s been that kind of week

“If I see another bunny or squirrel run across my desk, I’m gonna shoot it.” (Spoken to a fellow employee by Yours Truly) Before anyone calls PETA or Dan summons The Editor, let me explain. It’s been that kind of week. A bunny, squirrel, bunny, squirrel, bunny, squirrel, bunny, squirrel week. There’s a lot going on. I love chocolate chip mint coconut milk ice cream. Costco is out of my Mediterranean salad mix. Ugh. I almost forgot to write aRead more

Low Expectations

“I have high hopes for later this week.” That’s what a co-worker stated in an email two weeks ago, believing that she would wrap up all of her loose ends by that Friday. It would be her last day before moving on to a new job. Just what makes that little old ant Think she’ll move that rubber tree plant Anyone knows an ant, can’t Move a rubber tree plant But she’s got high hopes, she’s got high hopes She’sRead more

When Pigs Fly!

“The phrase ‘when pigs fly’ is an adynaton—a figure of speech so hyperbolic that it describes an impossibility. The implication of such a phrase is that the circumstances in question (the adynaton, and the circumstances to which the adynaton is being applied) will never occur.” I don’t believe Tank the piglet can fly, but he might be dreaming of it. Tank, the Kunekune piglet, lives on the farm from which Natasha and I purchase organic chicken and duck eggs. He andRead more

Sonnet of Dark Dulcitude

On February 13, 2015, I wrote a blog post titled Chocolate Chips: A Valentine Song. The chocolate chip song was a bit of a cheesy take on Journey’s Open Arms. It was a passable post, I suppose, but not the best writing I’ve ever done. Thirteen months later, a small group of bloggers were challenged gently encouraged by Dan at No Facilities to rewrite a former post…an offering we had published in the past that screamed do-overs! or a story thatRead more

Breathe Deep

The soil is the great connector of lives, the source and destination of all. It is the healer and restorer and resurrector, by which disease passes into health, age into youth, death into life. ~Wendell Berry~ This time of year, spring in Wisconsin, the smell of mud and dirt begin to permeate the senses.  We see the dark combination of minerals and decaying organic matter poking through the melting snow, finally freed from months under a blanket of frozen white. TheRead more

A Master’s Sweetness

Back on March 15th, I wrote how mom’s KitKat habit switched to a Starlight Mint habit. (The latter is still in full force.) The comments were wonderful, but I had a special back-and-forth with The Master of Something I’ve Yet to Discover, who tried to educate me about TimTams and the war between Crunchies and Violet Crumbles. I got the distinct impression that this is the Australian “Hatfields vs. McCoy” war of candy bars. I relayed to The Master how difficult itRead more

Bulleted Drivel

It’s one of those weeks where… I have no inspiration to write I have little time to write Work is getting in the way (that’s every week) I’d rather go to the gym or shopping after work I’d rather eat supper and watch reruns of Star Trek Voyager on Netflix I’d rather sleep   I’ve had ideas for a post about… Easter blessings The Easter Bunny Dark chocolate bunnies Holy Week Spy Wednesday April Fools’ Day Sugar-laden peeps and jellyRead more

Chocolate Chips: A Valentine Song

(Sung to Open Arms by Journey) (My apologies to Journey) Standing beside you Here with the dark Wanting your cocoa with wine Softly you whisper You’re so sublime How could our love be just mine? We left the store together Your pieces apart And there you are on my tongue   So now I covet you Oh Chocolate Chips Nothing to hide Believe what I say So there you are Oh Chocolate Chips Hoping you’ll be The loving sweet to me ChocolateRead more

Not So Sweet Resolve

“What good is the warmth of summer, without the cold of winter to give it sweetness.” ~John Steinbeck~ How true when wind chills hover around -35 Fahrenheit (-37.22 Celsius) in the wee hours of the morning and when daytime temps are near 0. We are having an especially frigid week, reminiscent of last year’s It’s-colder-than-a-witch’s-behind winter. The long johns and hot beverages are working overtime. Funny, I’m not especially grumpy over the cold. I told Herman over at Hands onRead more

Mmmm…BACON

For my vegan friends and followers…cover your eyes. Natasha and I love BACON. Not just any kind of BACON. It has to be Neuske’s Wild Cherrywood Uncured BACON. We are hooked on said bacon like a hungry perch on a fat and tasty nightcrawler. Oscar Mayer and other lesser brands cannot compete. It is simply the best. In a little town called Wittenberg, about 63 miles north of the Fox Valley, there is a well-known place called Neuske’s that you can findRead more

Flexing a Chocolate Bicep

Strength is the capacity to break a chocolate bar into four pieces with your bare hands – and then eat just one of the pieces. ~Judith Viorst~ Oh Judith, why did you say that? Did you have to go there? I thought strength meant lifting a 40 pound bag of kitty litter or firmly ending a relationship or parents breathing “no” to the kids (and meaning it) or the ability to make important financial decisions. Am I somewhat strong ifRead more
