365 Revolutions

Traveling in a straight line giving way to curve Savoring smoothness of sail avoiding potholes and poop Feeling warmth of golden sol or bony dampness of drizzle Suffering under pressure, distress overcome by retreat, security A year has gone by 365 revolutions Winter, spring, summer, autumn snow, tulips, bike trails, red maple A year of never before a year of heart’s desire, emotions, expectations Gone once around the fiery blaze to a day of cake and candles Existence subjective, evolvingRead more

From the Kitchen…

Natasha and I haven’t danced a polka in the kitchen for some time. It’s a bit unnatural. I’m not sure why because we often intersect in the kitchen during supper and snack time and making of the foodstuffs. You’d think we’d knock each other over once in awhile, or dance. On Saturday, Natasha was standing near the cupboard door that I needed to open. As I began to open the door, I said to her… “Watch your head.” Her response?Read more

She’s Ninety Freakin’ Nine!

That’s what Natasha exclaimed on Saturday morning. We were talking about mom. Monday, August 6th, is Pauline’s birthday. She will be 99 years old. Ninety Freakin’ Nine. Although mom’s health might be considered “poor,” the fact that she is still on the planet is amazing to me. My cute, little energizer bunny has outlived her husband, all of her siblings, all of her friends, and most people who were born in the year 1919. She has lived to this dayRead more

I’m Hungry!

“The belly is an ungrateful wretch, it never remembers past favors, it always wants more tomorrow.” ~Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn~ And so it was, the Saturday morning after my boss’s retirement party. After an evening filled with appetizers such as pretzels and beer cheese dip, meatballs, sausage and cheese, taco dip, raw veggies and delicious crostinis. After a few slices of pizza. After a couple of drinks. And after the cake…the magnificent lemon poppy seed cake! I ate like Miss Piggy. Yet,Read more

Rare Artistic Opportunity

Weekly Photo Challenge: For this week’s challenge, show us something that stands out from the everyday. It’s a rare opportunity when parents are able to send their children to a week-long arts camp without shelling out even one penny. Yet, they were afforded that possibility this week through Mission Church, a Christian community in Appleton, WI. Since 2013, children in the area are able to come to the church during one week in August to dance, work with wood and clay,Read more

Origins: Reconnecting

That laugh! As I listened to it echo through the phone, the 22 years of a lost connection melted away. I instantly remembered a sound that I had long forgotten – it was the laughter of friendship. Later, as this friend and I met and hugged and reminisced at a local Starbucks, the fond memories of years past came flooding back…awash with shared meals and adult refreshment, a trip to Canada, card games, watching her children grow, and pondering whyRead more

Wednesday Word of Thanks

In 1984, President Ronald Reagan signed Proclamation 5187, creating “National Correctional Officers’ Week.” Each year, the first full week in May is recognized as National Correctional Officers and Employees Week, commemorating the contributions of correctional employees who work in jails, prisons, and community corrections across the country. I thanked my co-workers with a white-chocolate raspberry cake (no ice cream) this morning. If you know someone – a friend, family member, neighbor, acquaintance – who works in a correctional setting, pleaseRead more

Sonnet of Dark Dulcitude

On February 13, 2015, I wrote a blog post titled Chocolate Chips: A Valentine Song. The chocolate chip song was a bit of a cheesy take on Journey’s Open Arms. It was a passable post, I suppose, but not the best writing I’ve ever done. Thirteen months later, a small group of bloggers were challenged gently encouraged by Dan at No Facilities to rewrite a former post…an offering we had published in the past that screamed do-overs! or a story thatRead more
