Synchronized Fleet Fishing

Question: What do you call a group of pelicans? Answer: A pod; pouch; scoop; squadron. And, if they are fishing as a group, the pelicans are called a “fleet.” I recently witnessed a fleet of pelicans fishing while biking around Little Lake Butte des Morts. Similar to choreographed synchronized swimming, this fleet kept to a tight circle, alternatingly bobbing their heads down under water to catch fish (while their backsides mooned) and coming up to swallow their yummy and sustainingRead more

#CBWC: Walking, Hiking

This week’s entry for Cee’s Black and White Photo Challenge (CBWC) includes photos of places to walk or hike. The majority of photos were taken while I was on the bike (naturally), but the trails and reserves in the Fox Cities host walkers, hikers, and bicyclists. We have a plethora of nature’s beauty to choose from. Join the fun of black and white photography by clicking on the link at the beginning of the post. Details and weekly themes canRead more

In a Moment

In a moment I shall see the wholly beauty of thee the chartreuse forest sublime in a taunting seasonal rhyme In a moment I have laid down Horizontal lifeless brown Roots exposed to autumn air The forest sing-song in despair In a moment I stand tall Piney feathers never fall Limbs hold up a child dear An endless mission crystal clear In a moment winter will come My leaves fallen, done I’ll capture the warmth of sol Rue arrival ofRead more

Clean Laundry

“It’s the little things, sometimes.” A friend of mine spoke these words recently and I agree with the sentiment. Sometimes it doesn’t take much… A small gesture of kindness A knowing smile Chai tea latte When a new recipe is a winner Laughing with friends Game night A glass of wine or a pint of beer Shared food Never being without dark chocolate A winning raffle ticket Clean laundry Purring cats Another football win Snow that clings to the treesRead more

Gone

Gone are the flowers of summer. Burgundy, pink and white. They lived forever, it seems. Through rain and blazing sun bright. Gone are the hues of precious petals. The colors that swathed the porch. They lived forever, it seems. And held nature’s beautiful torch. Gone are the leaves that climbed and spread. The vine as it followed its trail. They could have lived forever, it seems. Impatiens under the guise of frail. Gone are the flowers, into an empty field.Read more

Spring Buds

A tree may be lovelier than a poem, but it is nothing without its spring buds. The buds that bring life to the earth after a long winter. The buds that shout, “Hello! It’s time!” Time for beguiling beauty. Time for the richness of color. Time for Mother Earth to bless us with renewal. This past week, as I spent time walking on two different trails, I took note of the buds. Buds on the trees, buds on the bushes, budsRead more

It’s Right There

“Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it.” ~Confucius~ Dear Hole in the Leaf: We see it, the beauty that you encircle. The world on the other end awaits. This is the path to greatness of nature and space. This path of wood and gravel leads us to the universe, the one of beauty. The one of green forests, azure oceans, purple mountains and fields of wheat. This path of modest description leads us to a world of over sevenRead more

Botanical Beauty

The brother was here this weekend, a quick visit for Mother’s Day. When he’s here, there are always specific places he likes to go – restaurants, brew pubs, points of interest – that are unique to the area. On Saturday, we headed north to the Green Bay Botanical Garden, per brother’s request. I’ve been there several times, for every season (except winter), and never tire of the display. We weren’t sure what to expect, so it was extremely delightful thatRead more
