Hoshi, the Star Trek Cat

For those of you who follow me on Facebook or Instagram, you already know I did a “thing” on Friday and adopted an eight-week old kitten, who I have named Hoshi. She’s adorbs and a handful. I had forgotten how crazy active a kitten can be and Hoshi gets the award for living up to that standard. I dare you to try and pick her up when she’s in the heat of play…if you can actually catch her.

Hoshi means “star” and was a female character on Star Trek Enterprise. Not a big surprise given I’m a Star Trek geek, but it felt right. The other two choices were Elly (an NCIS character) and Lucy (because who doesn’t love yelling, “Luuuucy…I’m home!”).

Gibbs had a disjointed nose from the get-go, sniffing and hissing, sniffing and hissing, and pouting. Gibbs, though, is a gentle and laid-back cat, so there has been no physical response other that a couple of swats when Hoshi was trying to attack his tail. Sunday afternoon, Amazon dropped off a box of stuff and two opposing forces found some common ground.

The Cat Federation is drawing up a peace treaty as I type. It is not known if it will be accepted, but I have hope for the future.

Hoshi is going to be a handful for awhile. She runs and plays without thought about where she’s going or what she’s doing. Trying to keep her out of the kitchen is impossible, as is trying to keep track of her location. Hoshi is adept at climbing and already made it to the top of the large cat tree.

Considering this is one of the places Gibbs like to sleep during the day, he may be a bit put out. I see a future battle of wills with this one.

Hoshi is also vocal (oh boy!) and sassy. If I put her in the cat carrier or kitty playpen to keep her confined when I can’t keep an eye on her, she cries a pitiful cry until I release her or she decides to take a nap. Most often I have to release her because I’m just a softie who can’t stand the sound of sad kitty cries.

I have no idea how her eventual personality will be once the crazy kitten is out of her. I don’t know if she’ll be a lap cat, if she’ll be calm like Gibbs, be a favorite of visitors, or a willing participant in the clipping of the claws. Hoshi has one green eye and one blue eye and either they will be the sign of a beautiful, loving adult cat, or those eyes will be a sign I should buy the skull and crossbones cat collar, rename her Khan Noonien Singh, and pray a lot.

Have a purrfect Monday and as I have a busy morning, I will respond to your “she’s so cute” or “good luck with that” comments as soon as I’m able.

She is adorable. Remember to give Gibbs a little extra lovin’ – I know, that was unnecessary.

MuMu just gave me a warning look. “Don’t even think about it!” is what I think she meant.

    Happy Monday, Mary!

Extra love given, Dan. Gibbs and I are enjoying the quiet for the moment before we release the wild one from the other bedroom. Hoshi is something else and I recommend you pay attention to MuMu. Two is plenty! 😼😼

      • Dan Antion says:

MuMu isn’t even sure she wants MiMi around. They were both content to live in places Maddie couldn’t get (gates) but now that they both have the run of the house, they want to be in the same place, but not with each others. Sisters, what can I say?

      • bikerchick57 says:

That’s how Gibbs is at the moment. “I will tolerate you, but don’t touch me.” And Hoshi responds with “YeeHah!” as she pounces on his tail, uninhibited. :-p

She is SO CUTE!! The picture of Gibbs and Hoshi in the box is the sweetest. But then the cat house picture and her wrapped in her blanket… Hopefully the peace treaty is signed soon.

    • bikerchick57 says:

Negotiations are continuing, Lois. Gibbs is asking for a “no touch unless I say so” clause, but Hoshi is ignoring him. I’m waiting for him to gently bat her to her senses or sit on her until she waves a white paw. Ha!

What a beautiful story! It’s always very exciting when an older cat gets to meet a new cat resident. But I guess Gibbs will get used having a cat sister. Love the name too, Hoshi sounds very cat-like.

    • bikerchick57 says:

Every day, Herman, it appears Gibbs is a little more accepting of Hoshi. The positive for him is that he has places to rest that she still cannot reach. It helps him acclimate to the new resident.

Meanwhile, Hoshi is busy attacking my feet and not obeying any rules, as kittens usually do. πŸ˜‰

You made my Monday! I grinned all through this post! Congratulations to you and Hoshi and my condolences to Gibbs. I’m pretty sure he’ll get over the initial shock and a peaceful dynamic will be achieved. Until then let the hijinks continue!

    • bikerchick57 says:

Oh, the hijinks will continue for some time. Hoshi has taken to following and attacking me when Gibbs won’t give her his time. I’ve been trying hard to give Gibbs extra attention, talk softly to him, and tell him he’s still my favorite. I hope he understands.

Happy Monday and glad I could provide some smiles today. πŸ™‚

Ha ha ha! You do know that sometimes the crazy kitten becomes the crazy cat… But it in the theme of all that is Star Trek it will all work out in the end.

    • bikerchick57 says:

I’ve thought about the crazy cat thing, Pam, but her cuteness and ability to make me laugh might be enough mitigation to offset. Fingers crossed! :-p

I wondered when I saw your post on IG. Gibbs will be a good big brother. We had a similar situation years ago. Our tuxedo cat, Sylvester was a year or so old when the neighborhood β€˜loose’ cat started having wild litters. A couple strays found their way to our place but he’d have none of until one little white gal showed up. He let her stay so we did too. They became soul kitties for years. BTW I have one blue and one green eye, so…. πŸ˜‰β€οΈ

Gibbs will be fine with the little one. I’m trying to give him his own quiet time, which includes their separation at night. Well, it’s more like my quiet time because I think Hoshi would have me up half the night, wanting to play. Two different colored eyes are cool, Cheryl. You’re cool!

  7. Welcome to your new home sweet Hoshi! She looks an adorable handful Mary and please give her and sweet Gibbs a few gentle pats from us all πŸ’•πŸˆ xxx

She looks lovely, they have so much energy when they are kittens, and you can always guarantee they will make you laugh out loud.

    • bikerchick57 says:

I’m calling her the little Klingon. Cute, yes, but she’s a warrior who attacks everything. Typical crazy kitten!

  9. joey says:

My white girl kitty has one blue eye and one green/yellow and she is the biggest lover ever. She knows no strangers. She’s also quite the attention wH*Re so it runs both ways, but I’m guessing Hoshi will not be an evil kitty — she’s yours, after all! ^_^

    • bikerchick57 says:

Hoshi has had her affectionate moments. Today she cuddled up with Gibbs for their afternoon nap and let me love her up a bit more than usual. I hope the trend continues!

  10. JoAnna says:

What a great name! I did not know Hoshi means star. I bet she and Gibbs will get along well in time, especially in view of the nap cuddling. One thing’s for sure: Hoshi feels safe enough to be herself.

    • bikerchick57 says:

Hoshi is definitely herself and she has been snuggling with me too. Gibbs would probably like her to be less of an attack kitten at times, but it’s going to take time for Hoshi to settle down.
