Light and Shadow

Green light of his eye holds a soulful gaze

He lays in the comfort of red and gold

Hardness of life digs into clouded daze

The stress of being cat cannot be sold

“Hey mom?”

“Yes, Gibbs?”

“Watcha doing?’

“Trying to write a sonnet or poem about you.”

“I hope you are telling everyone that I’m a good boy.”

You are, buddy, most days…”

His world has changed somewhat for the better

Gray paws roam free without prison’s firm gate

She is gone, the other human petter

And with it, the rules distort and update

“I’m confused.”

“About what?”

“The rules. I’m confused about the rules. As long as we have lived here, I’ve never been allowed in the kitchen at night when you’re sleeping.”

“You’re still not allowed, but what I don’t know won’t upset me. I’m hoping you’re more worried about sleeping than snooping around the kitchen at 1:00 a.m.”

“Can I snoop during the day?”

“Absolutely, 100% NOT!”

“Party pooper.”

“We still have rules, mister.”

The shadow of new existence overcomes

Quiet still broken by his somber cries

To mom, food, love his tiny heart succumbs

Being good and obedient, he tries

“I like this being alone with you.”

“Is that because I’m a pushover?”

“No. I haven’t had mackerel or a porch bird in a long time.”

“And hopefully not for a long time to come.”

“Whatever. Anyhow, I like that the kitty gate is gone and I get to roam all of the rooms now.”

“Except for the kitchen.”

“Yeah, that. Whatever.”

We stay the same and yet ever changing

Naughty, hungry, sleepy, rearranging

I like the way you structured this post, Mary. He seems to enjoy this new phase of existence.

I donโ€™t know how you keep him out of the kitchen. Our girls would never abide by such unfair and arbitrary human rules.

Welllll…I think he finds his fair share of time in the kitchen at night now…while the human is snoring. Update on the auto feeder: It was working well until this week, when Gibbs decided that he still needed to wake mom up at 3:30 am and make that machine spit out its food. I love Gibbs to death, but he can be so trying at times. ๐Ÿ˜‰

It cannot be an autofeeder unless it is built with cat psychology. excuse me cat psychosis. it must seek out the cat and in unmistakable terms convey that the cat should, no must be hungry now. and it will be fed now. so the cat can look back aloofly and indicate it is neither pleased or amused. this unpleasing device will be reported on the next visit to the mothership.

Lol, you may be on the right track, John. Cat psychosis is real and the mothership a definite possibility. I guess it’s only autofeed in my mind, not his.

Love the little asides! The poem is likewise loved – cats will be cats no matter what anyone else desires!! My cats (long gone) were very good about staying off the counters and table but were impossible to keep off the bed….

Thank you! I’ve never tried to keep my cats off the bed, although it might mean fewer trips to the laundromat to eradicate cat hair. I only keep them off the pillows because who wants to wake up with a mouth full of fur?

Haha! Right. I am 100% sure he stays out of the kitchen at night. Bahahaha!!! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜น You’re a good boy, Gibbs. My cats are cracking up just thinking about that!

      • bikerchick57 says:

Right. Mom does not leave food or crinkly plastic things (Gibbs like to chew on them) on the cupboard. That’s just asking for trouble!

    • bikerchick57 says:

Glad I could give you and your cats a laugh today. I’m waiting to find pawprints on the stove or counter, but so far, nothing. Maybe he’s been up there a few times and been disappointed at the lack of anything chewable or edible…or maybe he runs in stealth mode at night.

Thank you for your awesome appreciation, Teagan. I was caught between wanting to write a sonnet and have a conversation with Gibbs, so I did both. ๐Ÿ˜ผ๐Ÿ™‚

Cats are amazing! Although I never had one but a friend does and his cat is always jumping around in its own world!
    Great post!

Thank you! Gibbs really has his own world and rules, sometimes very oblivious to my will. But I love him to death, he’s forever in my heart.
