Gray exists in abstract feature and lines
It can never be the lover of true
The dope is blackness and white for the times
Their hearts doth lie with definitive stew
The sisters lay in dual existence
In dark inkiness and the soft of snow
Whiskers twitching in muscle’s common sense
The cautious, darting almond eyes aglow
Twins in no-color shades of ying and yang
Essence of tuxedos in voices raised
Demands of attention is their harangue
The worth of humans constantly appraised
In twists and curls and stretched-out repose
The black and white beauty of paws and nose
This post is the result of encouragement from fellow blogger Dan Antion at No Facilities, to pen a black and white poem following a recent black and white photography challenge. While this sonnet has nothing to do with the photo challenge itself, it does have a lot to do with Dan’s feline masters, MiMi and MuMu, whom he features quite often in his photo galleries. Can you tell the adorable sisters apart? Mimi is on the left of each photo set, while MuMu is on the right.
Beautiful
Thank you Beth!
Very nice work, Mary. It’s a beautiful sonnet. MiMi and MuMu are honored. I’m sorry, MuMu says “appropriately honored.” She added that this is why she needs to be brushed, so that she looks her best at all times. I’ve shared this with their other humans.
I hope you have a great week.
Thanks Dan and please thank the girls for being my gorgeous muses by giving MuMu a few extra brush strokes and allowing MiMi a few extra minutes of sleep. And add in a few skritches when permitted.
Happy Monday!
Done and done! I hope Gibbs isn’t jealous.
Gibbs has had plenty of notoriety here, so he sends his purrs to the girls.

Well done, Mary. I am sure the girls appreciate this.
Thanks Lois. I hope I gave MiMi and MuMu their 15 minutes of fame!
Excellent verse – really captured the feline essence!
Thank you! Havig been around cats for 40 years and knowing Dan’s two girls through his posts, it was not too hard to capture essence.
It is hard to tell them apart. We had black and white twins who came to live with us with their momma when we moved in 19.5 years ago. Momma Kitty died two years ago, and Scardy developed diabetes and we put him down at age 19.5. The other one developed cat leukemia and lived about 7 years. Their noses were a little different. I didn’t know this until Scardy had surgery last January. Outdoor cats with white noses are more susceptible to getting cancer.
Scardy lived a good long life! Sorry about the other one and I did not know either about cats with white noses. That’s very interesting – there’s so much to learn about cats, about their health, their color and personalities.
I know! Even with Scardy and his family, we didn’t know much. WE got them all fixed and they lived outdoors. When he started getting frail, my husband let him in. When his momma died, I got some more strays from next door. Two of them made it to adulthood and stayed with us. They are now inside cats, so we are learning a lot more. They both have their own personalities, habits, and routines even though they’ve been together since they were about four weeks old. Since that time I fostered two more babies dropped off by their momma in our yard then abandoned. They now have new homes with kids who needed a pet project.
Awesome, Marsha. Thanks you for fostering and taking care of the fur babies in need of a home.
It was fun, and for the first time I gave them away, and that was nice, too.
What a lovely tribute, Mary. And, I think I could tell my twin granddaughters apart more easily than these two!
I think MiMi and MuMu may enjoy their ability to fool the unknowing. It keeps us guessing. πΌππΌ

I can only tell them apart if MuMu is in her window shelf seat. They are adorable. Thanks for featuring them here, Mary J. Hugs on the wing!
Yes, they are adorable girls, Teagan. Hugs!
