“No, no, no, no, noooo!!!”
This is the highly upset one-liner that I loudly whispered on Monday when, after spending an hour creating a fantastic post for today, it disappeared.
Gone.
Gone forever.
I know I saved it.
I remember saving it.
Where did it go?
Did my uncoordinated fingers betray me again?
Is WordPress messing with me?
I have no idea where it went and, no, I did not type and save it in a Word document first. I had been doing that, but threw caution to the wind on some crazy I’ll-type-it-directly-into-WordPress whim. Crazy stupid.
Had everything gone as planned, you would have been reading about how others recently asked, “Did you do something different with your hair?” to which the answer is no, not really, but it takes a flat iron, lots of hairspray and a small request to God in order to make the Red Sea part in the back of my head close back up before heading out the door every morning. And even then, the end result of hair preparation is based on which way the wind blows. Because I never know…
(Today’s photo is the one I would have used for the hair post, but it seems equally appropriate for the current mess.)
What you end up with, folks, is a much shorter, still-mad-Mary post about losing a possible masterpiece and time wasted when I could have been aimlessly laying on the couch, watching an aimless TV show.
In summation, the moral of this one-liner is: Remember to always save your writing to a word processing document first and you’ll never have to write a “no, no, no” post…ever.
Lesson learned.

I still mourn the loss of a brilliantly written post a few years ago that went AWOL when I hit ‘Publish’. So sad that the world was denied the genius.
For all of us who have suffered from this kind of tragic loss, I can only assume it is part of the master plan of the Universe (ie WP) to humble those of us who strive for greatness. My condolences …. and congratulations on having your genius recognized by the Universe. Call it the proverbial silver lining.
I feel as if I’ve won an award, JoAnne. I think we both have, from the Masters of the Universe in the category of “Awesome Sauce Lost.” (There’s a maniacal laugh that goes with the presentation.)
Thanks for the condolences. The no-no post may not be brilliant, but at least it didn’t disappear. That’s the silver lining. 🙂

I’m not sure that I’ll ever feel daredevil enough to post directly into WP after experiencing similar vanishing acts. You have my sympathies. And my kudos for making lemonade out those lemons!
I don’t know that I will ever post directly into WP again. I did for many years when I first started blogging and nothing ever happened. Guess I was writing on a wing and a prayer instead of playing it safe. No more, Maggie!
I do a ‘volunteer’ blog and I was putting a post together this morning, had saved and scheduled it only to have the numbers before the paragraphs change to letters and not in sequence. I worked on that thing for a half an hour and finally had to eliminate the numbers/letters altogether. I think today is going to be one of ‘those’ days. 🙂
That’s too bad, Judy. I’ve had formatting issues in WP before, but not quite what you describe. Weird. Sounds like WP gremlins at work, so maybe today is a good day to go for a walk rather than try to fight them. 😉
Oh, Mary–I have had posts say ‘oops! Can’t be found.’ Whatta ya mean, can’t be found? I just hit publish. Not sure what happens, but you do have my sympathy.

I am sorry to have missed reading that post – now gone (like my hair). I learned this lesson the hard way, multiple times. When the stars line up against you, kaboom.
Yes, well the stars can take a hike. I’ll be saving my work in another format, no matter what. I think of how I might have felt if I wrote a longer piece and this would have happened. You would have heard screams all the way to CT.
It’s especially frustrating when the words were flowing well.
I think we used to have that word document thing a long time ago, but it disappeared into the unknown. I just write in WP, and knock wood, nothing’s ever been lost. So sorry it happened to your post.

Ah, yes, I’ve learned this lesson. Twice, I think. There’s an open word document on my desktop labeled “current RFTM post” where I save stuff before I hit save in WP just in case it eats the darn thing again!
This girl is going to have an MJM document with the next post. Learning the hard way…

Thanks Laurie. Even though I believe that post is gone forever, there’s a teeny piece of me that wonders if it’s going to show up a year from now, on a day that’s not Wednesday. And my readers will be scratching their heads and saying a collective “Huh?”
I’ve had this happen. There’s some weird short cut of pressed key combination that I think causes your writing to be junked never to be found again. That, or your computer has gremlins. I feel your loss and I think we can agree, unsung hair style bloggery is to be mourned with gnashing of the teeth and rending of one’s sack cloth and ashes!
Amen! Evidently, my uncoordinated fingers found the short cut deletion method. It’s sad, but I’m over it and moving on.
Sad. Far as I can reckon, this happens to everyone at least once. Sad.
PS: My hair grows in a circle (cow got me good) and I relate to the back of the head bit.
As with the football post, I am over the loss. Moving on today to color the grays that are even more apparent when the hair doesn’t behave.

I’m getting ready to go for a new color… I don’t know who I am any more (after I couldn’t keep working). So maybe a total reboot with a new hair color and I’ll just reinvent myself.
Funny you said that. I have been thinking I need to start going lighter (gearing toward eventual gray when I’m 80) and was looking at the dark blonde colors. Blondes have more fun, right? 😉
My natural color was light blond. I didn’t start having fun until I dyed it red! LOL. (Seriously, lighter colors are supposed to be better as we “age.”) So I have my eye on a pastel rose gold, a “cool” or muted color from Feria. It will be a couple of weeks before I get to it though.

Ugh! That has happened to me more than once, Mary J… WordPress has a downright impressive number of ways to torture us. As for hair — All I can ever be certain of with mine is that it will not do what I want it to do. I gave up fighting that battle a long time ago. Invest in stock in your favorite hair spray, and buy a 2 year supply in case they stop making it. More hairspray is my solution. 😀 Hugs on the wing.
LOL, I do use a LOT of hair spray, Teagan. It’s the only way to make the part behave.
I never thought of WordPress torturing us. It’s too bad we’re all so co-dependent and hang around! :-p
