A Simple Question

Mary, Did You Know?

…is a Christmas song with lyrics written by Mark Lowry and music written by Buddy Greene. It was originally recorded by Christian recording artist Michael English on his self-titled debut solo album in 1991 (English and Lowry were both members of the Gaither Vocal Band at the time). It reached No. 6 on CCM Magazine’s AC Chart. Lowry would record the song several times himself, most notably with the Gaither Vocal Band on their 1998 Christmas album Still the Greatest Story Ever Told.

The song has since gone on to become a modern Christmas classic, being recorded by many artists over the years across multiple genres.

The story behind Mary Did You Know? can be found HERE.

And the lyrics follow:

“Mary, did you know?
That your baby boy will one day walk on water?
Mary, did you know?
That your baby boy will save our sons and daughters?
Did you know?
That your baby boy has come to make you new?
This child that you’ve delivered
Will soon deliver you

Mary, did you know?
That your baby boy will give sight to a blind man?
Mary, did you know?
That your baby boy will calm a storm with His hand?
Did you know?
That your baby boy has walked where angels trod?
And when you kiss your little baby
You’ve kissed the face of God

Mary, did you know? Mary, did you know? Mary, did you know? Mary, did you know? Mary, did you know? Mary, did you know? Mary, did you know? Mary, did you know?

The blind will see
The deaf will hear
And the dead will live again
The lame will leap
The dumb will speak
The praises of the Lamb

Mary, did you know?
That your baby boy is Lord of all creation?
Mary, did you know?
That your baby boy will one day rule the nations?
Did you know?
That your baby boy is heaven’s perfect Lamb?
This sleeping child you’re holding
Is the Great I Am

Oh Mary did you know?”

I could not pass up this song for the fourth week of my Christmas Carol One-Liner Wednesday, probably because it’s one of my favorites and I love, love, love the Pentatonix version. I’ve listened to others, but this is the only one that gives me goosebumps. Enjoy and have a merry, joyous Christmas!

Great selection! I have never heard this version, but you’re right, it is one of the best. This has been a very nice way to celebrate the season.

Thanks Dan! I love my Pentatonix Christmas CD and the one with this song is my favorite. I will hear it played at church during special seasonal events when background music is utilized. Great song!

Love this version of “Mary, Did You Know?”! Love to you and your family at this Christmas season!

  3. Ooh, I know this one well. We sang it in one of my singing groups. I love it. Well, except for that rather nasty high A on “Lamb”. Tough for a mezzo soprano.
(I know I’ve missed some. Last school day for students today then teachers finish tomorrow. Hoping to have more time to catch up on what I’ve missed with the summer holiday break. 🙂 )

It’s so weird for me to comprehend summer holiday break at Christmas time. I was in California one year before Christmas and it was equally weird to see colored lights decorating the palm trees.

I sing along to the song as much as an alto can. The rest I leave up to others lest I make the dogs howl. 🤐

      • The good thing is we get to run the school year in line with the calendar year. The bad thing is that we’re never organised for Christmas because we’re too busy doing end of year stuff like writing reports and packing up our rooms. 😏

        Sing loud, sing proud!

Pentatonix were on an acapella show on NBC several years ago and were fantastic. I’ve been following them ever since and have a few of their CD’s. Check them out on YouTube, you may like some of their other renditions.

I agree! Love that song and I love the Pentatonix version, it gives me chills 🙂

I’ve been hearing a few other versions on the radio and they just are not as good, Shelley…in my opinion.

I’ve loved this song since I first heard it. Pentatonix does a beautiful job with it. (And everything they do.)
