Pavlov’s Dog at the Microwave

“Only by observing this condition would the results of our work be regarded as fully conclusive and as having elucidated (explained) the normal course of the phenomena.”

~Ivan Pavlov~

I turned into Pavlov’s dog last week.

In an attempt to heat up a mug of lukewarm coffee at work, I inserted said mug of liquid lusciousness into the microwave.

Then I pressed a button.

There was no beep.

I pressed another button.

Still no beep.

Well, is this thing working?

It’s a used but new-to-us microwave, so I wasn’t quite sure.

I checked the microwave’s functioning ability and it appeared to be doing its job.

Silently.

It was creepy and eerie and not right with the universe.

Why isn’t the microwave beeping?

Microwaves are supposed to beep.

Yet, it was working just fine.

Hot coffee in hand, I looked again at the control panel and finally noticed…

This microwave has a mute button.

Like a remote control.

Someone had pressed the mute button.

It wasn’t right.

How am I supposed to salivate over my coffee if there is no beeping?

I pressed the mute button to unmute.

It beeped again.

Yes, this is how it’s supposed to be.

Beep, beep, beep.

All was right with the universe and the microwave.

Funny, though.

I had a sudden urge to eat a donut.

And a chocolate chip muffin.

Hmmmm…

Interesting phenomena.

I know, Judy. I seriously stood there thinking the microwave had died. It’s like church bells not ringing on Sunday morning or not hearing my cats cry when it’s feeding time…wrong, wrong, wrong!

  1. Dan Antion says:

Oh – that’s so wrong! Microwaves must beep. I don’t like the beep, but the beep is required. Now, go get that donut, and…where’s my kibble?

  2. Joanne Sisco says:

There are many things I’d like to put a mute button on, but the microwave isn’t one of them.

Beep me when the coffee and doughnut are ready! Now you have me salivating too.

  3. Ha! This is hysterical.
But I’m completely unfamiliar with the concept of treats at work… And they won’t let us out unless the finicky badge=gate lets us out… I’d ask if I was in prison, but I’m pretty sure they at least get TV.
    Hugs!

No treats where you work Teagan? Either that’s torture or a good way to keep a girlish figure.
We have a large TV monitor in our conference room, but only for work purposes. No Netflix! Boo!

  4. Shelley says:

LOL – thank you for the chuckle this morning! Happy Wednesday to you!!

    • bikerchick57 says:

You’re welcome Shelley! I hope your part of the state is having the blue skies and sunshine that is here in the east.

    • bikerchick57 says:

I didn’t either, Lois, and I have no idea why. So we don’t wake the neighbors? Or the sleeping cats? Or because there’s someone out there who really hates the beeping noise?

  5. Frank Hubeny says:

I especially liked the way the dog looked at that bell at stage 2 in the illustration. Just seeing the words “chocolate chip muffin” makes me want to taste one.

  6. John Holton says:

Did you go back to your desk and make a little sign for the microwave that said, in big red letters, “PLEASE DO NOT MUTE THE MICROWAVE!”? I would have.

    • bikerchick57 says:

I thought about that, except I’m not sure if someone silenced the microwave intentionally or accidentally. It’s been a week and no one has reinstated the mute, so I think we may be good.

  7. Claudia says:

HaHa…I love it! It’s like waiting for the toast to pop up…and it’s done and it HAS popped up..just not high enough. Fun times.

    • bikerchick57 says:

That toast thing happens all the time, except with waffles that are too short. I have to stay close to the toaster…

I remember reading a book about Pavlov and his experiments way back in Jr. High school. It was so interesting. We all get into a certain routine, and expect the same thing to happen every time, but that microwave not beeping is just very strange. Glad you figured out what happened. šŸ™‚

LOL! You’re the cutest! That’s the cutest microwave story everrrr! LOL

Sadie gets her new allergy pill shoved into somethin yummy and she starts droolin when she hears the rattle of the pill bottle — cracks me up every time!

    • bikerchick57 says:

      Aww, thanks Joey. šŸ™‚

It’s a good thing Sadie likes her pill in a yummy. I’ve tried that with cats and it doesn’t always work. When Gibbs was sick last year, I tried to give him his pill in a pill pocket. At first he ate it all. Then he got smart…ate the pill pocket…spit out the pill. Mr. Smarty Pants.

  10. Hilarious. You got me thinking about what might have happened if Pavlov had a neighbor who brought home a set of windchimes.

Hahaha! A microwave that didn’t beep would drive me nuts! I hadn’t even considered it a possibility until now. I’ll be on the lookout next time I need a new one to make sure it beeps!

  12. A mute button on a microwave?? I know the situation over there is not ideal but that’s just a step too far.
Now, on the other hand, whoever thought it was a good idea to make phone keyboards beep or click really had a sick mind.

    • bikerchick57 says:

Oh, so true about the beeping/clicking cell phone. Thank goodness I have a mute selection for that. It would drive me crazy otherwise.
