Today is January 13th and time for Linda G. Hill’s Stream of Consciousness Saturday or SoCS. Quite often the prompt is one or two words that Linda picks herself. However, she’s giving us a bit of a challenge and some freedom with this prompt:
“When you’re ready to sit down and write your post, look to the publication (book, newspaper, permission slip from your kid’s teacher, whatever you find) closest to you, and base your post on the sixth, seventh, and eighth word from the beginning of the page.”
I have strewn
myself across the bed
without rest
My eyes are awake
at 10:38
I have strewn
the covers in a pile
in a sweat all the while
an email I send
at 11:10
I have strewn
my arms to the side
where Ziva resides
Loud purrs I adore
at 11:44
my legs to the floor
and get up once more
The bladder I hate
at 11:58
I have strewn
and twisted and turned
the brain continues to churn
the new day is seen
at 12:15
I have strewn
one too many times
the bird clock faintly chimes
it’s the hour to find peace
at 12:33
I have strewn
the final strewn
inside the bedroom
the eyes finally close
at time unknown
Stream of Consciousness Saturday is the wide awake idea from author Linda G. Hill. Every Friday, Linda provides her followers with a prompt. It can be a word or words and sometimes bonus points are involved (my favorite). Linda asks us to write without editing, other than correcting spelling errors.
Just go with the flow.
Like a babbling brook, ambling stream or running river. Click HERE if this type of writing floats your boat or helps with your decision-making process.
Very nicely done!
I never like those nights when the clock seems to be messing with your head while you toss and turn.
Thanks Dan! I went to bed early last night and got some good rest so I could go work out early this morning. Thursday night was awful, but certainly over and done.
Over and done is a good thing for that to be.
We were going out today but they’re calling for strong wind and freezing rain.
Nasty weather! Staying home is the best option.
How did you know that was my last night’s attempt at sleep? I will never make it through the day without at least a short power nap. Can you spell – exhausted. 🙂
It must be catching, Judy. I hope you don’t have a million things to do today and can take that power nap. It’s hard to get through the day when you’re dragging.
I’ve had those strewn nights, too. One year, I had so many sleepless nights in a row, I read three Harry Potter books bing bang boom. Haven’t been able to identify which plot went with which book since. Put me at a disadvantage with my grandkids until they moved on.
I think about reading when I can’t sleep, but I never feel like turning on a light and putting my glasses back on. It seems like defeating the purpose of wanting to sleep. I suppose choosing to toss and turn and pet the cats doesn’t help either.
I’ve not read the Harry Potter novels, but watched the movies. Unfortunately, I would also be unable to identify what plot went with what movie.
This bout I’m talking about wasn’t wanting to sleep but couldn’t; it was BRAIN ON SPEED CAN’T SLEEP DON’T WANNA. Don’t know what was up with that. I’m usually all about the Zs. Now, when I want to lull myself into sleep, I do alphabet games, like: Think of five songs with title or first line beginning with A, then five beginning with B, and so on. The key (ha ha) is to let your mind wander as you search your memory for the songs.
That’s a great idea, Marian. When my brain is wired, I tend to lay there and think about the many things I need to do at work and home. Which only stresses and keeps me awake longer.
Hey, look at us putting out the poetry about the annoying things our bodies and minds do to us. 😀
You inspired me, H, along with that sleepless night. 🙂
Tellin’ it like it is. [two thumbs up]
Awww sorry about the sleeplessness. I so hate that. I always swear I am sleeping on the weekend. Then just at dawn, I awake, so excited I don’t have to work and can read, write, go outside, cook…..my brain is doomed to wakefullness. Have a great weekend Mary. I love your whimsical poetry.
Thanks Cheryl! I may need to add “whimsy” to my categories! I was able to get a good night’s sleep last night, even though I had to get up early. Feeling good now with much of the day to conquer!
Then go get ‘em Mary!
I HATE those nights!! … and you are SO. GOOD. at this format of writing. I love your poems.
Thank you for your poem love, Joanne. ❤
Those nights are a visit to hell. I guess sometimes that is necessary so we know what heaven looks like. Well done, Mary.
In heaven, we all get o sleep nine hours straight (no crazy cats or worries on the mind) and wake up refreshed to the smell of coffee and bacon. That’s what I’m counting out, anyhow. 😉
Ooooh bacon. Yessss
I love it, Mary! ❤ I'm one of those people who, most of the time, falls asleep the moment my head hits the pillow. Hate me if you must. 😉
I used to be like you, Linda, and fall asleep right away. Then menopause and age hit, soooo…. 😉
The dreaded menopause only affected my sleep for a while … But I’m still only in my fifties.
Love this! So relatable, poetic, and well done. Love it! Great turning and returning of the phrase.
Thank you, Joey! You are too kind. Perhaps I should have sleepless nights more often to bring out the poet in me…
or not. :-p
No, no, that’s crazy talk!
That was.. apropos, given that my Friday-into-Saturday was exactly that kind of “sleep”. Though the 6am wake up time probably didn’t help.
This read beautifully. Too bad I could relate so well.
Thanks Eden. Let’s hope that neither of us can relate to this poem for several weeks to come.
