Thursday Doors: A Walk Along the River

In June I went for a walk.

I know, surprising.

The walk took me to the part of Appleton known as “The Flats.”  The Flats is a well-known area that is home to industry, apartment buildings, eateries and two walking trails along the banks of the Fox River.

I’ve walked the Newberry trail many times, but this summer I discovered the start of the Fox Trot trail is right across the road and wraps around a portion of the river.

Neither stretch of trail is terribly long, but they offer scenic vistas of the river and a number of doors. Actually, it is only the Fox Trot Trail that contains any amount of doors. The Newberry trail, on the other hand, is a bit lacking in doors, unless you count the brew pub several feet from the east end of the trail.

This was my starting point – at Appleton Lock 3 and the door on the little blue shed.

On the first leg of the Fox Trot Trail, I immediately encountered doors.

I have no idea what this garage was for. It was on the corner, not attached to anything.

I’m not positive that anyone enters this door that looks like a big shutter.

The second leg travels past my favorite restaurant and down a small hill to the Fox River.

Whoever enters this door raises and lowers a bridge for the boats.

You can see the door to the bar, right?

Aptly named as bald eagles hang out here.

Another mystery…a home in the middle of the bridge, surrounded by the river.

Next leg, along the river, has wonderful scenic views.

For the remainder of this walk, I found myself once again on a city street, admiring the view and the interesting doors.

So there you have it…a quick walk along the Fox River. Many interesting doors in a “flat” and very pretty place of the city. I hope you enjoyed the sights!
