Thursday Doors: A Walk Along the River

In June I went for a walk.

I know, surprising.

The walk took me to the part of Appleton known as “The Flats.”  The Flats is a well-known area that is home to industry, apartment buildings, eateries and two walking trails along the banks of the Fox River.

I’ve walked the Newberry trail many times, but this summer I discovered the start of the Fox Trot trail is right across the road and wraps around a portion of the river.

Neither stretch of trail is terribly long, but they offer scenic vistas of the river and a number of doors. Actually, it is only the Fox Trot Trail that contains any amount of doors. The Newberry trail, on the other hand, is a bit lacking in doors, unless you count the brew pub several feet from the east end of the trail.

This was my starting point – at Appleton Lock 3 and the door on the little blue shed.

On the first leg of the Fox Trot Trail, I immediately encountered doors.

The second leg travels past my favorite restaurant and down a small hill to the Fox River.

Next leg, along the river, has wonderful scenic views.

For the remainder of this walk, I found myself once again on a city street, admiring the view and the interesting doors.

So there you have it…a quick walk along the Fox River. Many interesting doors in a “flat” and very pretty place of the city. I hope you enjoyed the sights!

I’ve been remiss in participating in Thursday Doors. You know, the sensational weekly blogfest led by the incomparable Norm 2.0. My bad! I blame it on a lame horse and no time to take him to the farrier. Or something like that. If you are wondering what Thursday Doors is all about, click HERE to walk with Norm’s band of merry door stalkers. Door people travel up and down the river to find the biggest, best, prettiest and most delapidated doors of the world. Make sure you peruse Norm’s weekly offering and click on the blue froggie thing at the bottom of the post. That will take you to the heart of the door people and their doors!

Thanks! It was a windy day when I took that photo. Hence the wild river. It has it’s calm moments too.

I love walking, collecting doors and ending at a brew pub (I’m taking a guess on that). Thanks for bringing us along with you. It may not come as a surprise, but I love the photos of the bridge over the rushing river snd the old railroad tracks. I have to come back later on a bigger screen.

Unfortunately, I didn’t stop at the brew pub that day. It’s a great place, though, as they have a huge variety of beers and a view of the river.

The photo of the bridge and river is my favorite. It’s such a pretty view and the river contains a wide variety of winged creatures, like geese, ducks, seagulls and pelicans that provide a bit of entertainment.

Your photos are interesting. It looks like a fun place to walk– nice and flat. That river is way cool, making me think of cozy English mysteries wherein a body is found along the banks of a wild river on a windy day.

Thanks Ally. The Newberry Trail is all flat. However, the Fox Trot trail does have a couple of up-and-down spots due to The Flats being in a river valley. I’m hoping I never find a body down there, but I wouldn’t mind a cup of English tea while I sit and admire the view.

Thanks for the lovely walk this morning. I haven’t been out for mine yet and I have many errands to run instead. I appreciate being taken along on your’s.

The upper doors on the paper mill caught my eye. I’m always a bit puzzled by these openings on upper levels. I’m imagining some kind of conveyor belt to get stuff in and out of those doors.

There would have to be a conveyor belt or chute of some kind to utilize those doors. When you get around to it, take a nice long walk for me. Been struggling with plantar fasciitis for at least a month now, so walks tend to be shorter and slower. It’s killing my style!

eek! not fun!! Hope you’re getting some good physio for it. Plantar fasciitis can be a dog to get rid of.

Nice collection from your walk 🙂
I really love the photo of the river in front of the old paper mill. I also love the doors on the paper mill building, and of course, your shot of the old tracks.

Thanks Joey. The photo of the old paper mill and river seems to be the favorite, but Dan will really appreciate that you also love the railroad tracks. 🙂

I follow Norm too and love the doors! Also love your walk through Appleton! My daughter-in-laws parents live there! Will have to ask them about the walk.

Thank you Claudia! I’m positive they will know this part of Appleton and probably ate at one of the restaurants there.
